19th Century French Pencil Drawing Of Dancing Putti

Delicate 19th Century French School Pencil Drawing Of Dancing Putti

This lovely ‘Farandole’ or joyful dance circle is drawn in quick strokes of lead pencil for what was probably a ‘Sopraporte’ project.
17 little cherubs prance about to the tune of flutes and triangles under the watchful eye of the statue of Pan.
The drawing is joyful and full of mirth.

The ‘Sopraporte’ were rectangular paintings that were set to decorate the upper lintel of a door and were presented as a project in a smaller version to the owner of the houses, before being replicated in full colors, in situ.

The frame is 19th century, gilt wood and in fine condition.

The drawing is sincerely lovely…

The Frame measures 16.92 inches by 10.23 inches
The Drawing measures 11.02 inches by 3.92 inches

It was purchased in Paris in April 2018.
