Beautiful Pencil Drawing of a Dominican Monk by Isidore PILS.

This Drawing shows the full extent of Isidore PILS’s art with the pencil.
The lines are strong, the hand precise and the rendering masterful.
The drawing is in lead pencil with white highlights and a slight wash.
The Dominican Monk holds a study book in his right hand and gazes through the drawing with soulful eyes……

Isidore PILS was the son the Painter François PILS who sent him, to well a know painter’s workshop Lethiere, then onwards to the Beaux Arts in Paris.
In 1838 Isidore would win the Prix de Rome and would move to Italy until 1844.
He would visit Naples, Venice and Florence acquiring a taste for the Religious subjects.
He returned to Paris in 1863 and taught at the Beaux Arts. He was also tasked with decorating the ceiling of the Master Staircase at the Opera House.

Born in 1815 in Paris he passed away in Douarnenez in 1875.
In 1876 between March 20th and April 1st, his collection of paintings and drawings was sold in Paris with the stamp that figures on our piece I. PILS.
It is registered under number L2030 in the Lugt record.

The Drawing is in a Period frame made beautifully of wood and gilded plaster.
This enticing drawing was acquired in Paris at Crait & Muller under # 105

The Drawing measures 12.20 inches high x 8.66 width.
The Frame measures 21.3/8 inches high x 15 width.
