Beautiful Bacchus Topped French Silver Drageoir By Lebrun

Beautiful Antique French Silver and Crystal Drageoir by Marc Auguste Lebrun.

In France we call them ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’ – But the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam container), and it turns out that originally, they were only thought of and used as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls.

Contrary to many of these pieces, here the Crystal urn is completely apparent and elegantly wheel cut into swirling gadroons.

It rests on a square terrace decorated with a frieze of water leaves and four claw feet with acanthus and lotus leaf attachments.
The handles are gorgeous in the shape of swans with outstretched wings supporting a silver border decorated with pearls and water leaves. The domed lid is topped by a terrace of vine leaves and flowers on which a young Bacchus is kneeling.
