Beautiful Silver ‘Drageoir’ By Louis Joseph Thomas ~ SOLD ~

This Amazing Antique Silver Drageoir is by Maitre Orfèvre Louis Joseph THOMAS in Paris.
Known for his exquisite ‘repoussé’ work, his pieces are amazingly ornate.

In France we call these pieces ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’ – But it turns out the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam container), and that, originally, they were only thought of and used as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls.

The body has 2 main figural ‘Tableaux’ showing Cupid holding his bow and arrows, a cape billowing above him and playing with his dog. The Handles are decorated with palms as well as with papyrus designs and rosettes, with their base resting on top of a disc itself held aloft by a swan. The top of the bowl has a beautiful fringe showing a laurel wreath and rosettes, surrounded top and bottom by pearls of silver. The ‘Frétel’ (or Finial) is in the form of entwined palms and rosettes and has acanthus leaves surrounding its base. The bottom of the ‘Piedouche’ (or pedestal) has rosettes designs and is resting on a square platform itself supported by lion’s feet’s. The bowl insert is white crystal with ‘facettes’, it is original and in perfect condition.

The piece is absolutely amazing and bears no dents or even light marks. Beautiful condition!
The width given above is taken at the handles – The depth given above is that of the insert.

The Hallmark is 2ieme Coq -1st title – Hence 1809 -1819 – Paris
