Beautiful Silver ‘Legumier’ By Debain & Flamant~Sold~

Elegant and impressive French Antique Silver ‘Légumier’ or covered Vegetable Dish, by DEBAIN and FLAMANT in Paris.

The lid is particularly fine with an elegant scalloped and fluted border, and topped by a magnificent rendition of two Silver turnips and their carved stalks and leaves out-flowing on the lid.
The ‘Frétels’ or finials were, quite often, if not most of the time, carved separately and attached to the lid by a silver bolt underneath. This enabled the help to clean the silver properly! It is the case in this gorgeous piece. The carved lid also shows a monogram EB which is again seen on the vessel itself. The silver handles show a leaf detail.
It is quite large and very heavy and in excellent condition.
It could really be used either as a Soup or Stew Dish or for its original use.

The Hallmark is Minerve 1 -1st title – Hence 1838 to 1919 – Paris

The Makers Mark is for DEBAIN and FLAMANT. Their Mark shows the two names in a lozenge form and was in sculpted in May 1864. It was canceled (‘Biffé’ in French) on in November 1874.
Thus we can precisely date this piece to between May 1864 and November 1874 or a ten year period. They were located 140 Rue Du Temple in what is today known as the Marais part of Paris.
