Bougainvillea in The South of France by Alphonse Rey

A Charming Watercolor painting of an estate gate topped by Bougainvillea in the South of France, by southern France painter Alphonse Rey.

Born in Marseille in 1865 and travelled extensively around the Mediterranean before settling in a small city close to Marseille: Les Martigues.
Alphonse Rey was a student of Felix Ziem and subsequently later in life became the curator of the Felix Ziem Museum in Martigues near Marseille.

He used mainly watercolors and took his inspiration from the South of France and the a few countries around the Mediterranean.
He was known for his delicate compositions full of light and transparency.
Rey passed away in Les Martigues in 1938.
