Charming Pair of French School Regency Aquatints

Aquatints were popular in the 18th century when dealing with scenes that needed to be reproduced.
The technique consisted in etching copper plates to produce an effect resembling the flat tones of color washes or watercolors.
The tone or tints were obtained by acid biting through the pores of a ground that only partially protected the copper.
By that process spaces rather than lines were etched with acid, producing tones that gave the effect of a watercolour.

In the case of this charming pair, the scene presented is very much in keeping with the romantic yet ‘osées’ paintings that where all the rage under Jean Honoré Fragonard and his students.
Both scenes depict ladies being ‘courted’ by gentlemen in their bedrooms or ‘boudoirs’.

The frames date back to the Regency period and are beautifully worked in gilt wood.
They are in perfect shape.
A charming pair!

Our two Aquatints have the following dimensions:
The Drawing is 4.72 inches wide by 6.69 inches high
The Frame is 11 inches wide 14.00 inches high

They were acquired in Lyon at Berard & Peron SDV under # 20 in December 2017.
