Dainty Antique Silver Covered Cup By JP Bibron ~Sold~

A Refined and delicate Louis XVI Style French Antique Silver covered cup which once again shows the fineness of the Maitre Orfèvre at work. Jean Pierre BIBRON is a favourite of ours for his very clean lined and elegant work.

The Cup, rests on a circular ‘Piédouche’or Pedestal, with a palmetto wreath surrounding its edge. The upper part of the cup is engraved with a delicate garland of stylized flowers and arabesques, while the rim has a beautiful palmetto motif which extends out beneath the lid when the cup is covered. The same garland adorns the surface of the lid adding to its daintiness. The edges of the lid have a lovely pearl design topping a lightly engraved palm fringe. The top of the lid (or Frétel or again Finial) showcases a pine cone, resting on a crown of acanthus leaves superbly engraved and showing a lovely guilloche second row of leaves. The handles are engraved with palm designs, with a rosette at their centre.
A lovely piece, which could have been used a wedding gift except for the fact it does not carry the bride or the groom’s name. It can be used in a myriad way, from candy holder, to sugar casket to condiment or gravy bowl or even with a crystal insert as a caviar bowl.
The height indicated above is for top of finial. The length is taken at the handles.

The Hallmarks are multiple! We can find Poinçon Vieillard (or Michael Ange) 1 -1st title – Hence 1819 to 1838 – Paris, but also an earlier mark showing 2ieme Coq – 1st title – or 1809 -1819 which means the piece was minted right at the transition of the two periods in 1819.

This lovely piece was created by Maitre Orfèvre Jean Pierre BIBRON. Jean Pierre BIBRON’s Makers Mark shows ‘A Rampant Lion with a Star over the Lion’. He was received Master in Paris in 1798. He resided on the gorgeous ‘Ile de La Cité’ in Paris, 3 Rue de Harlay.
