Delicate XIX Century French Lead Pencil Drawing Of A Man

Delicate XIX Century French Lead Pencil Drawing Of a Man

Presumable that of a certain Monsieur Eivessin as is noted on the back of the frame, this little portrait is extremely delicate.
In fact would it not be for a close up one would think you were looking at one of the first photographic picture taken.
The Lead pencil strokes which are evident on close examination can immediately dissipate any doubts as to this piece.
The lovely details show a young gentleman dressed in the romantic fashion typical of the mid 19th century.

As described in a period fashion manual in 1850:
‘The Jackets must have a basked bodice and large lapels; the vest underneath is elegant and ornate and the tie is now a flowing scarf which falls back on the jacket.’
‘Sideburns are now the norm’

Indeed our fellow seemed to follow the rules!
The drawing is beautifully framed in an 18th century gilt wood frame which is in beautiful condition.
It is signed by Des Robert.

The frame measures 8.66 inches by 7.87 inches
The drawing measures 5.90 inches by 4.72 inches
The drawing was acquired in February 2018 in Vendome.
