Elegant Antique Silver Drageoir By CP Vahland~Sold~

An Elegant Antique French Silver ‘Drageoir’ by ‘Maitre Orfèvre’ CP VAHLAND
In France we call them ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’, but the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam container), and we can add that, originally, they were only thought of, and used, as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls.

The body of this elegant Drageoir is Baluster shaped (or Medicis Vase Shaped) with six Figural ‘Tableaux’ representing, for two of them, Cornucopias surrounding floral arabesques, and for the other four, simpler versions of the floral arabesques…
The second tier of the main body is beautifully lined with a geometric fringe also showing tiny rosettes, while the upper border shows a silver pearl bound reed wreath.

The pedestal is square, resting on four beautifully carved lions feets, while the square register is decorated with acanthus leaves and the upper level of the pedestal is lined with a laurel leaf garland.

The ‘Frétel’ (or finial)is made of two cornucopias topped by an open pomegranate, resting on a crown of laurel leaves.
The two silver handles are lined with acanthus leaves and end with cornucopias.

The bowl insert is white glass and was probably replaced but fits the pieces and does take away from its beauty.
The piece is very elegant and very different from the Drageoir’s you usually come across.

A wonderful detail for the collectors: The piece is marked with what is known as a ‘Head of Greek Women’ with the letter P on the left hand side…
This is a hallmark that was used during the Revolution between 1793 and 1794 in Paris so Vahland may have re-worked on a piece dating prior to 1819…

The Hallmark is ‘Poinçon Au Vieillard’ (Michel Angelo Hallmark) -1st title (950/1000) – 1819-1838- Paris.

The Makers Mark is that of CP VAHLAND. His mark shows a C, a P and a V underneath, with a dot between the C and the P, and a flower vase above. His mark was registered in 1810. He held shop at 20 Cours de Harlay in Paris. He specialized in larger decorative pieces.
