Gorgeous Antique French Silver Louis XV Style 24 piece Ménagère or Flatware Set by Ernest COMPERE.
It is composed of 12 dinner forks and 12 dinner spoons in heavy Antique silver. The pieces are beautiful to handle, heavy in the hand and wonderfully smooth.
The handles are in the elegant so called Rat Tail design otherwise called ‘Modèle Uniplat’ or beveled pattern. The forks and spoons have a beautiful raised monogram surrounded by acanthus leaves and ending in a seashell design, with a P interlaced with two L’s on the reverse side of the handles. A light design of beautifully etched acanthus leaves connects the handle to the spoon or fork part.
This set is in superb condition with no scratches or marks and is presented in its original monogrammed box. The box is in good condition but is showing some age marks.
The set weight an extraordinary 4.77 lb of silver and is marked on each piece with the Minerva 1 Hallmark and the Maitre Orfèvre Mark.
Each fork weighs 3.15 oz. Each spoon weighs 3.20 oz. The length given above is that of the spoons, the forks measures 8.46”
The Hallmark is Minerva 1-1st title (950/1000)- 1838 -1919 – Paris
The Makers Mark is for ‘Maître Orfèvre’ Ernest COMPERE showing E and C divided by a Running Hare!!! His mark was active between 1878 and 1883. His store was located 79 Rue de Quincampoix in the Marais area of Paris. He was succeeded later on by his widow, Veuve Leontine COMPERE. Today the place where his store once stood, has kept its allegiance to art, as it now showcases an Art/Painting Gallery.
