Elegant Pair of Gilt and Patinated Bronze French 1st Empire Candlesticks

A very elegant Pair of French Patinated and Gilded Bronze Candlesticks dating to the 1810.

Typical of what would become known at the Empire Style, this Pair of candlesticks is very refined and takes its inspiration from the Greek Mythology.
Two patinated bronze feminine figures are represented dressed in beautifully draped togas with delicate wings.
Though originally presented as ‘Renomées’ or ‘Fama’ in Greek, they lack the trumpets that would definitely indicate this role.
Winged goddesses, they can simply be harking back to the Angels or to Apsaras, celestial winged beings.

The pedestal and the cup or ‘binet’ are in ormolu and decorated with delicate palmettos.

A perfect example of the Elegance found in the Empire style…
