Large Pair of 18th Century Silver Candlesticks By Jean Hannier

A Large Pair of 18th Century, Louis XV time, French Silver Candlesticks by Jean Hannier, dated 1774.

The circular foot is decorated with gadroons and applied with three acanthus leaves decorated lines with on one side a plain medallion, ribbon tied.
Le lower part of the foot Is lined with alternating interlacing decorations of rosettes in a geometric décor.
The shaft is decorated with gadroon and with three swags of silver laurel leaves, the vase-shaped tap or socket is applied with a line of laurel leaves, while the wick is simply lined.

Created during the last year of Louis XV’s reign this pair already predicts the decors of the Louis XVI time.
They are quite heavy and are in good condition.

As usual the fact that the piece bears the Fermiers Généraux Marks used under the Old Regime in the city of Paris is what makes it special:

You have the Charge Mark (Poinçon de Paris) for Paris showing a circular flower shape, used under Fermier Général Julien Alaterre, Starting October 1st 1768.
This Charge Mark ends on November 17th 1774.

Photo # 8:
On the lower part left of this photo: we see the Crowned L or Poinçon de Jurande for Paris 1774, used between July 16th 1774 and July 14th 1775.
On the upper part of the photo we have the Makers Mark for Jean Hannier, who registered his Mark on July 27th 1756.
The son of a Master Silversmith he was baptized on July 19th 1722
His mark shows his 2 initials under a crowned fleur de lys with an eagle below and two dots.
He was sponsored by Maitre Orfèvre Nicolas Clement Vallier.

He was declared passed away on August 8th 1781 in Paris.

Photo # 7:
Triangulating between both the Charge Mark and the Jurande Mark, our piece can be dated fully in 1774.
