18th Century Drawing Of Antique Ruins And Colonnade Capriccio By Jean Henri Alexandre PERNET.

In this lovely Ink and pencil enhanced watercolor, Pernet reproduces an imaginary landscape, which shows a rotunda and a colonnade located in a Parc. The ruins cascade into a pond and are animated by classically dressed figures.

Jean Henri Alexandre PERNET was famous for his ‘Caprice’ or ‘Fantasy’ views of ruins in Italy and more particularly in Rome.
A trend made very popular by Hubert ROBERT and Charles Louis CLERISSEAU.
Pernet studied under Pierre Antoine DEMACHY and displayed his work at the Salon in 1779.

Although he never set foot in Italy, Pernet used the very popular Gianbattista Piranesi Prints of Ancient Rome to construct Fantasy views of imaginary places he created by juxtaposing classical ruins and more recent renaissance monuments.
He used watercolors but also a peculiar method of ruled lines in pen and ink to outline his monuments.

While we know his birth date is 1763, his death is thought to have occurred between 1789 and 1791.
Today his work can be found in many museums of which the Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum and the Morgan Library collections.
