Lovely 18th Century Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon By Nicolas Gontier

A Lovely and Delicate Antique French Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon by Master Silversmith Nicolas Gontier.

The bowl of the spoon is in beautiful ‘repercé’ motif showing a Rose Window cut out, in the Model #4 used in Paris.
The center decorated with teardrops and tulips while the rest of the bowl is decorated with acanthus, cornflower and tulip motifs.
The end of the handle shows a simple double line.
The work is extremely refined and the piece is in very good condition.
It is just a perfect design. Typical of the early to mid 18th century.
Lovely to use to sprinkle sugar over fresh strawberries per example!

The width given above is that of the spoon’s bowl.

The Hallmarks are under the Fermiers Généraux régime:
Photo # 6: You have the Crowned A or Charge Mark used under Fermier Général Julien Alaterre, starting October 1st 1768.

Photo # 7: You have the Poinçons de Jurande or Lettre Date, showing a crowned F for Paris used from July 12th 1769 to July 9th 1770.
You also have on the lower part of the photo the helmeted face used as a Discharge Mark starting October 1st 1768 under Julien Alaterre.

Our spoon is dated 1768-1770.

Photo # 8: You have the Makers Mark for Nicolas GONTIER showing his initials topped by a crowned Fleur de Lys and separated by a crozier.
Gontier Registered his Mark on December 14th 1768 with Germain CHAYE as his godfather.
