Lovely Pair Of French Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Cassolettes~Sold~

A Lovely Pair of French Louis XVI Style Gilt bronze ‘Cassolettes’ or Candlesticks on green marble bases.

Standing on small round gilt bronze feet they have a triform marble base on which the Cassolettes rise up on lions paws terminating in lionesses heads linked to one another by a laurel garland.
A central ring carved with rosettes holds the legs firm.
The bowl is decorated with spokes of hearts as well as rosettes and ribboned reeds its base is decorated with a finely detailed berry sprouting from an acanthus wreath.

The upper part consist of a removable lid inverting to a candle scones with on the reverse a delicate spin top.
The green marble base is probably coming from the Maurin Quarry located in the Alpes de Hautes Provence, which produced one of the finest green marble from the 6th Century to the early 20th century.
Well know for its lovely color, with artists it was dubbed ‘Vert Maurin’.

These lovely Louis XVI Style Cassolettes were in high fashion under Napoleon the Third’s reign.
They can be used to grace a mantelpiece or as candlesticks.
