Lovely XVIII French School Study Of A River Crossing~Sold~

Lovely XVIII French School Watercolor Study Of A River Crossing.

This charming painting was probably a project presented to a home owner for approval before the actual décor was done on his house.

The ‘Sopraporte’ or ‘Above the Door’ was an architectural and decorative enhancement proposed during the construction of a mansion by the artist working on the project.
It was usually rectangular in shape and very often took an antique style design in 18th century France.
The project usually involved casing the painting in a gesso relief.

We are most probably here dealing with a project presented in a portable manner before starting on the actual ‘in situ’ work.

This charming design is still framed in its original gilt wood frame.
The watercolour depicts the crossing of a barge pulled to the shore by a man under a structure representing a mill.

Our piece has the following Measures:
The Frame is 11.81 inches wide and 8.86 inches high
The Watercolour is 7.87 inches wide and 4.72 inches high

The watercolour was purchased in Paris at the Morel Auction House in December 2017.
