Patinated Bronze Statue Of Silenus Holding A Cup

A beautifully detailed patinated Bronze Statue Of Silenus Holding A Cup.
Representing Silenus or a Satyre, it shows the half god seated crossed legged on a gilt bronze pedestal and holding a cup that can be used as a candlestick.

The satyr is a creature of Greek mythology.
The satyrs, associated with the feminine Maenads, often form the “Dionysian procession”, which accompanies the god Dionysus.
They can also be associated with the god Pan. They are represented with the upper body of a Man and the lower members of a goat.

The first figurative representations of characters resembling satyrs date from the Magdalenian and are found on the walls of the Addaura cavern in Palermo.
The Silenus or Satyres were often considered guilty of excessive sexual desires and consumption of wine.

Our mischievous statue is beautifully chiseled in patinated bronze.
