Refined Antique French Silver Drageoir By Bourgeois~Sold~

A very Refined Antique French Silver Drageoir by Maitre Orfèvre Charles Louis BOURGEOIS.

In France we call them ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’ – But the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam container), and it turns out that originally they were only thought of and used as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls.

This ‘Drageoir’ shows very pure lines – simple but delicate – a turn towards the ‘Antique Theme’ that would soon take over the Arts on France.
The main body has 2 figural ‘Tableaux’ showing a palmetto design as well as two Cornucopias or “Horn of Plenty” or “Cornes d’abondance” In French. They symbolized wealth and abundance as well as nourishment. The upper register is lined with a delicate geometrical wreath.
The two handles are extremely refined ending in acanthus leaves and a cornucopia.
The terrace is square and rests on 4 pearls of silver and shows a garland of roses.

The lid is slightly dome shaped, and topped by a lovely Swan extending its wings

This piece is striking delicate and lovely.
The insert is original to the piece in heavy wheel cut crystal and in perfect shape!

The Hallmark is ‘2ieme Coq’ -1st title – 1809-1819– Paris
The piece also show a ‘Jeanette Revolutionnaire’ used during the Revolution years 1793 through 1794, in Paris which shows a the head on a woman front facing with a P on the lower left hand side.
It also show a Michael Angelo Mark, which means the piece was probably retouched in 1819.

The Maker’s Mark is for Charles Louis BOURGEOIS. He registered his mark on July 1780 and again in 1803.
