Striking Directory Silver and Crystal Drageoir By Jacquart ~Sold~

A Striking Directory Era Antique French Silver Drageoir by Maitre Orfèvre Marc JACQUART.

In France we call them ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’ – But the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam container), and it turns out that originally they were only thought of and used as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls.

This ‘Drageoir’ shows very pure lines – simple but delicate – a turn towards the ‘Antique Theme’ that would soon take over the Arts on France.
The main body has 2 figural ‘Tableaux’ showing a laurel wreath and palms as well as two Cornucopias or “Horn of Plenty” or “Cornes d’abondance” In French. They symbolized wealth and abundance as well as nourishment. The upper register is lined with a delicate geometrical wreath.
The two handles are extremely refined ending in acanthus leaves and a rosette on the upper part – while the lower shows a delicate lion’s head.
The terrace is square and rests on 4 oval palm fringed feet.

The lid is dome shaped, and topped by a Cornucopia.

This piece is striking delicate and lovely. The inside of the lid does show some repairs over the years yet from the outside nothing impairs the beauty of the piece.

The Hallmark is ‘1er Coq’ -1st title – 1798-1809– Paris

The Maker’s Mark is for Marc JACQUART. His Mark shows an M and a J separated by a Thyrsus, otherwise known as a sceptre surrounded by leaves. The symbol is of the attributes of Dionysus. Marc JACQUART registered his mark in late 1797, and cancelled it in September of 1809.
He practiced at the Hotel d’Aligre at 123, rue de Saint Honoré.
