Superb Pair of French Ormolu Covered Vases by Émile Carlier

Superb Pair of French Chased Ormolu Covered Vases or Pots Pourris by Émile François Carlier

This gorgeous pair in chased and gilded bronze, rests on square bases with pearl and are decorated in Neoclassical Style.
They show a rich ornamentation of ‘Ronde Bosse’ carved Cupids, Garlands of Flowers and Grape vines.
In the upper part of the vases are represented architectural elements or triglyphs, more appropriately here ‘quadriglyphs’ as they show four columns instead of three used in Doric design.

The Handles show the same Doric style and are supported by beautifully chiseled heads of rams.
The lid is carved out with a lovely geometric design, once again taking its inspiration for Doric architectural details.
Both pieces are signed in hollow E Carlier.

The Workmanship is exquisite! Typical of the work of Émile François Carlier.
Émile Joseph François Carlier was born in Paris, in the 10th arrondissement, on January 3, 1827.
A talented Sculptor he studied under Jean-Jacques Feuchère and made his debut at the Salon in 1859.
He would exhibit there nearly every year from then on, until 1879 and died in Paris at the end of the same year.
Carlier often collaborated with the renowned Silversmith Émile Froment Meurice.
Their collaboration would famously produce a beautiful Table center-piece for Napoléon III, that was originally presented at the World Trade Fair of 1867.
This center piece is today displayed at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts.
