Very Rare French Silver 3 Pieces Surtout & Jardinière By Boin Taburet

While it is already hard to find a 1-piece Silver Surtout in perfect shape, it is extremely hard to find an original and complete 3 pieces Silver Surtout!
Most were done in Plated Silver or if they are in Silver often parts are missing!
So, imagine our pleasure at being able to present you with this lovely Antique French Silver and Mirror Surtout and its Silver Jardiniere!
We were thrilled to find it and are delighted to be able to debut it at the Washington Winter Show.

Called in French a Surtout, this incredible piece consists of a Jardinière and its matching ‘Dormant’ or Plateau.
The ‘Jardinière’, or center table if you would rather, was used in a variety of ways in order to embellish the table, by either setting flowers or fruits or other items that could enhance the set up.
In this gorgeous ensemble the Surtout itself is done in the Louis XVI Style with a simple double line on each of the three plateaus.
The three pieces are made to fit into one another giving a final oval shape to the ensemble.
Each piece is polylobed and has a very heavy amount of silver as you can see in the weight given below.
Their mirror surfaces rest on a mahogany base and on foliage decorated scrolled silver feet.
The silver is intact as are the mirrors.
Upon cleaning the pieces, we found a date written on the mirrors: 1907 Paris.

The Jardinière itself is the Louis XVI style as well, and decorated with Laurel garlands and tulip chutes as well as rosettes.
Its edges are scalloped and the border is lined with a ribbon tied reed line.
It is in great condition and once again done in heavy silver.
The interior of the Jardinière is in plated silver.

The Makers Mark for the Jardinière shows both the Mark of BOIN TABURET, and the maker of H Frères & Cie (Henry Frères).
The mark is for ‘Maîtres Orfèvres’ Georges BOIN and Emile TABURET. After individual successful careers they joined forces and registered their joint mark 1873. They went on to win a gold medal for their beautiful pieces in 1889 during the Paris World Fair.
They worked at 3 Rue Pasquier near the Madeleine Area of Paris.
In 1900, Georges Boin went into partnership with the silversmith Henry, under the company name Boin et Henry Orfèvres, hence the double marking on our pieces..
The firm was known as Henry Frères et Cie, 3 rue Pasquier, Paris.
The Makers Mark for the 3-piece Surtout itself is for Gaston SIGNARD and shows his initials surrounding a Mercury Head. He registered his Mark on September 3rd 1904.
