XVIII Century French School ‘Sopraporte’ Watercolor Study

The ‘Sopraporte’ or ‘Above the Door’ was an architectural and decorative enhancement proposed during the construction of a mansion by the artist working on the project.
It was usually rectangular in shape and very often took an antique style design in 18th century France.

We are most probably here dealing with a project presented in a portable manner before starting on the actual ‘in situ’ work.
This lovely design is still framed in its original gilt wood frame.
It shows a ‘grisaille’ medallion with a toga dressed main figure followed by a cherub, and presenting offerings on a pedestal raised altar.

The medallion is surrounded by an abundance of pastel colored flowers contrasting with the ‘grisaille’ central design.

The work is charming!

Our piece has the following Measures:
The Frame is 10.62 inches wide and 6.69 inches high
The Watercolour is 7.08 inches wide and 3.14 inches high

The watercolour was purchased in Paris at the Morel Auction House in December 2017.
