A Gorgeous and Elegant Silver Pot Pourri Cup by Maître Orfèvre Nicolas Modoux.
Athenian shaped this Pot Pourri stands on a tripod base resting on 6 silver pearls.
The bowl and lid a carved in a geometric openwork and hold a simple crystal shallow cup to receive either rose petals on amber crystals.
The lid is surmounted by a parrot and decorated with a counts crest, bearing the motto: Franc et Droit. We are looking to identify the family, which is originating in Brittany.
The lid’s rim is decorated with leaves and palmettos.
The piece is exceptional in style and would probably have been a special order.
The Hallmark shows the Poinçon au 1er Coq or 1st Rooster(950/1000) Silver for Paris 1798/1809
But it also shows the 2nd Jeanette Mark for the Association of the Goldsmiths used from 1794 to 1797 before the Marks were allowed once again after the end of the French Revolution.
It shows the head of a woman with a 1 on her right-hand side.
This piece was probably started around 1796.
The Makers Mark shows an N and M separated by a candlestick, for Maître Orfèvre Nicolas Modoux.
Modoux registered his Mark right at the end of the French revolution: 11 Frimaire de l’An V corresponding to December 1st 1796.
He would re-register at the beginning of 1798.
