A Delicate 18th Century French Silver Selfish Coffee Pot by Maître Orfevre Pierre Charles Micalef.
This coffee pot is called ‘Egoïste’ in French as it holds roughly 3 Espressos or 2 larger coffees but no more! Hence the connotation of Selfish!
The work on this piece is the perfect transcription of the expression ‘Less is More’
The Coffee pot is beautifully polished and delicately baluster shaped, with a charming clean cut duck bill for a spout.
The lower part of the spout is simply decorated with ‘Amati’ grooves or Cannelures in French.
The main body stands on three little feet
The lid is rounded and topped by a spinning top, while the edge of the lid is beautifully carved out with a simple tiny gadroon border.
The handle is in carved mahogany, and can be removed for cleaning.
The beauty lies in the lovely, lightly rounded balance, and the perfect size of the piece.
No dents – no marks – just perfection.
Of course the other important important are the Marks, since we are here dealing with a Pre Revolution piece.
The Hallmarks are under the Fermiers Généraux régime:
Photo # 5: You have the Crowned A for the Poinçon de la Marque for Large Silver Objects under Fermier Général Henri Clavel.
Photo # 6: We have the Eagle’s head used under the same Henri Clavel as a discharge Mark starting March 7th 1786.
Hence the piece would have have been finished by 1786.
Photo # 8: You have the Makers Mark for Pierre Charles MICALEF showing his initials topped by a crowned Fleur de Lys with a Rooster and 2 dots.
He started working as an apprentice on April 14th 1746 under Nicolas Duclos.
He registered his Maker’s Mark on August 21st 1773 with Charles Tirard as his mentor.
His address was listed subsequently as Rue Saint Eloi 1782.
